Engineer Inside The Rules: what Saudia actually did
Saudia partnered with brand consultancy Landor and cooling fabric company brrr° to create The Coolest Ihram: a high-tech version of the traditional Hajj garment. The fabric uses cooling minerals, active wicking, and fast drying to lower skin temperature by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius. It keeps all Islamic rules for Ihram intact. Launched at Arabian Travel Market 2025, it reached more than 8,000 pilgrims and was adopted by 12 major Hajj operators. Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Hajj also requested it for pilgrimage packages.
The tension it resolves
Saudia wanted to offer pilgrims something meaningfully better, but the garment at the centre of the experience is locked by religious law the airline has no power to change.
The challenge it solved for Saudia: How do you deliver a product that makes life measurably better inside a category where the outward form of the product is fixed by an authority the brand cannot override?
The mechanism
The brand treated the religious rules as the outer boundary of the design brief, then engineered all the innovation into what those rules do not govern: the fabric itself.
The proof
Distributed to more than 8,000 pilgrims in 2025. Adopted by 12 of the largest Hajj operators. Requested by Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Hajj for its official pilgrimage packages.
