Gay Sheep Save Gay People: what Rainbow Wool actually did
Shepherd Michael Stücke and Serviceplan rescued gay rams -- discarded because they cannot breed -- and gave them a permanent home on Stücke's farm in Germany. Their wool is spun into industrial-grade thread and made into patches, hats, shoelaces and a haute couture collection co-designed with Bill Kaulitz, Danny Reinke and Kilian Kerner. Supporters can also adopt a sheep via a 'sponsorsheep' programme. All profits fund LSVD+, Germany's largest queer rights organisation.
The tension it resolves
Purpose fashion is usually accused of being performative; here the product itself is the rescue act, so buying it is the impact rather than a donation added on top.
The challenge it solved for Rainbow Wool: How does a small purpose-driven initiative build a credible fashion brand and generate real funding for queer rights without a traditional marketing budget?
The mechanism
A real, marginalised creature -- the gay ram -- is used as a living mirror for human LGBTQ+ persecution, and its survival becomes the supply chain for a fashion brand whose existence is the advocacy.
The proof
Campaign: Rainbow Wool, Wool for Diversity, Serviceplan and Mediaplus, launched September 2024. 1.3 billion impressions across 33 countries. 20 million euro in earned media. 1.1 million additional social engagements. iF Design Award winner. Proceeds go to LSVD+, the Association for Queer Diversity. Note: no revenue or units figure is published, and the agency describes the venture as loss-making, so claim no commercial return.
