The Price Tag as Protest Sign: How Penny Let the Number Do All the Work

Penny (supermarket)Grocery RetailGermany / Europe

Penny, a German discount supermarket, ran print ads where the price label itself was the creative. No headline, no imagery, no gloss. Just the number. The insight was that adding decoration on top of a low price actually undermines it. Stripping everything away turned honesty into the idea. This mechanism lives in jugnu's Kosh.

The tension it resolves

Looking credible and designed while making the raw price the hero

The challenge it solved for Penny (supermarket): How do you advertise a discount retailer's value without making it look cheap or untrustworthy?

The mechanism

Stripping all creative ornamentation so the functional proof point becomes the aesthetic

For one week from 31 July 2023, the German discounter Penny sold nine everyday products at what they would cost if the environmental damage of producing them were included, across all 2,150 of its stores. The markups were calculated with the Nuremberg Institute of Technology and the University of Greifswald: sausages went from 3.19 to 6.01 euro, Maasdamer cheese rose 94 percent. Penny published the results in January 2024, and they were not flattering to anyone: sales fell on almost everything, and the only product people bought more of was the vegan one, whose true-cost markup was 5 percent.

The proof

All 2,150 German stores, nine products, 31 July to 5 August 2023. Results published January 2024: demand fell across the range except the vegan product, which carried the smallest markup.

Where this applies in India

This principle is available right now for generic medicine retailers whose actual prices beat branded pharma but whose ads still look like pharma ads. It applies to direct-to-consumer staples brands, think edible oils or atta, that compete on mill-fresh pricing but bury the number under lifestyle photography. It also fits budget co-working spaces that keep piling aspirational copy onto a rate card that, left alone, would close the sale faster than any tagline.
