The Billboard Nature Designed: How Britannia Made a Tree Its Co-Author
Britannia Industries and agency Talented built a six-billboard OOH campaign across four Indian cities. Each board was designed around a specific tree, letting real branches and leaves shape the layout. The living trees made the sustainability claims credible. The medium became the proof. This is one of the patterns inside jugnu's Kosh.
The tension it resolves
FMCG brands are routinely accused of greenwashing; Britannia needed proof that could be photographed and shared, not a paragraph that could be scrolled past.
The challenge it solved for Britannia Industries: How do you make a sustainability campaign feel tangible and credible rather than like corporate posturing, especially in a category where green claims are widely dismissed?
The mechanism
Design the advertising unit around the natural obstacle rather than removing it, so the environment becomes a co-author and a visible witness to the brand's claim.
Britannia and agency Talented created 'Nature Shapes Britannia', a six-billboard OOH campaign across Hyderabad, Kolkata, Meerut, and Pune. Instead of clearing tree sightlines, each biodegradable billboard was designed around a specific tree, Nag Kesar, Aam, Neem, or Peepal, letting branches and leaves shape the final layout. Each board carried a real sustainability milestone from Britannia's annual report, including plastic neutrality and 50% water reuse. Britannia also open-sourced their design manual for other advertisers to follow.
The proof
Within two weeks, the campaign's six low-budget billboards generated the equivalent impact of 428 high-visibility billboards, according to the Campaign case study (March 2026).
Where this applies in India
Indian agri-input brands selling natural or organic products could design their retail hoardings around the crop rows or soil conditions of each specific farm belt, making the land itself a witness. A heritage textile brand rooted in a particular weaving town could let the actual looms, walls, and light of that district physically shape its visual identity rather than just reference it. Packaged water or beverages making source-water claims could design installations around the actual spring or river, turning geography into credibility.
