The Emergency Network: How BCP Bank Made a POS Terminal a Safety Net
When phones are stolen in Peru, thieves drain bank accounts within minutes. BCP Bank solved this by turning its existing network of POS payment terminals at local shops into instant account-blocking points. No phone, no app, no call centre needed. The infrastructure people already walked past every day became the brand promise made real. This is one of the mechanisms in jugnu's Kosh.
The tension it resolves
Banks ask you to call them in an emergency, but the emergency is precisely why you cannot call, SOS POS dissolved that impossible loop.
The challenge it solved for BCP Bank: How do you give customers a way to protect their money instantly when the very device they would use to call for help has just been stolen?
The mechanism
Repurposing an already-ubiquitous piece of the brand's own financial infrastructure, the POS terminal, to perform a new, protective function without requiring any new device, app, or channel.
In Peru, more than 4,000 phones are stolen every day, and thieves drain bank accounts within minutes. BCP Bank, working with agency Circus Grey, turned the bank's existing network of POS payment terminals at small businesses nationwide into emergency account-blocking points. Any BCP customer who had just been robbed could walk into a nearby shop, enter their ID number and PIN on the POS keypad, and instantly freeze their account, no phone, no app, no call centre needed. The solution is permanent and open-source, with potential rollout across 1.3 million terminals across Peru. It won 7 Lions at Cannes Lions 2025, including 1 Grand Prix.
The proof
In the first four months: US$7.8 million protected, monthly money-theft reports down 48%, positive sentiment toward BCP up 83%. Won 7 Cannes Lions including 1 Grand Prix, plus the Gran MIXX (top prize) at IAB MIXX Peru 2026.
Where this applies in India
Indian banks and wallets have Business Correspondent agents and micro-ATM points embedded in kirana stores across tier-2 and tier-3 towns. That same network could become an identity or account recovery lifeline for customers locked out digitally. Telecom brands with retailer SIM-swap counters in every neighbourhood face the same opportunity. Even insurance networks with local agent offices could use this principle to give policyholders a human touchpoint for urgent claim initiation when everything else has failed.
