One Shape, A Thousand Ads: what Absolut actually did

AbsolutSpirits / BeveragesUS / Global

Absolut had a product almost nobody could tell apart from any other vodka in a blind taste, so from 1980 it advertised the bottle instead. The first ad showed the bottle with a halo, captioned "Absolut Perfection". Over roughly twenty five years the campaign ran more than 1,500 print executions, each one the bottle silhouette hidden in something else: a city, a season, a swimming pool, a painting. Andy Warhol asked to make one in 1986 and hundreds of artists followed. Absolut went from around 10,000 cases a year in the US to about 4.5 million by 2000.

The tension it resolves

An imported vodka had no heritage story that would land in America and no product claim that would survive a blind test, against a category where every brand said the same things about smoothness and purity.

The challenge it solved for Absolut: How do you build a premium brand on a product that is, by definition, indistinguishable from its competitors?

The mechanism

The brand converts its packaging into a repeatable creative format rather than a container. Because each execution is a variation on one silhouette, every ad both stands alone and deposits into the same memory, and because the format is open, outsiders like artists can contribute without diluting it.
